How to play

Put a painting from the collection back together. It is solved when the last piece locks into its place.

The picture

Pick a painting under the game, or New game for one at random. Pieces cuts it into about 24, 48 or 96 pieces (48 to start, 24 on a phone); the cut follows the picture’s shape, so a square one gets 25, 49 or 100. Every cut is new, and more pieces make the painting bigger, never the pieces smaller.

Placing pieces

Drag a piece from the box onto the table. Near its place it locks in; anywhere else it stays where you set it down. Set down beside a neighbour in the right position, the two join and move together from then on. A lone piece on the table dragged back onto the box goes back in.

Rotation

With Rotation on (it starts on), every piece begins turned at random, in quarters. Tap a piece (a press that doesn’t move) to turn it a quarter clockwise, in the box or alone on the table. Only an upright piece locks in or joins a neighbour; turn Rotation off and every piece starts upright.

Your pace

There is no clock: take your time. Until you pick up or turn the first piece, Pieces and Rotation cut the picture again at once; after that they are locked until it is solved or a new game starts. When the last piece locks in, the board ripples and Solved shows over the box.

Settings

Size zooms the pieces and the painting together. Guide shows the painting faintly in its frame; with it off, the picture shows above the pieces in the box, and a tap shows it large. Box lays the pieces out Neat or in a loose Pile, and Order puts them Mixed or Edges first. The divider by the box and the grip under the game give either more room.

Controls

Drag pieces with a mouse or a finger. In a neat box on a phone the box scrolls sideways and a piece comes out with a drag up; on a wide screen it scrolls down and a piece comes out with a drag to the side. With a keyboard, Tab to a piece; Enter or Space picks it up, ↑ ← ↓ → move it a square at a time, R turns it, Enter or Space sets it down and Esc puts it back.

Nothing is kept: a refresh starts over with a painting at random and a new cut.
