How to play

Fill every empty square so that each row, each column and each 3 × 3 box holds 1 to 9 exactly once. The puzzle is solved when every square matches its one answer.

The puzzle

Nine rows, nine columns and nine boxes of nine squares, some numbers given to start. Every puzzle is new, made in your browser with exactly one answer. There is no clock: take your time.

Levels

Easy starts with 38 numbers, Medium 32, Hard 28 and Expert 24 (a few more when taking one more away would allow a second answer). A new visitor starts on Medium. Until your first number or note, Level deals a new puzzle at once; then it is locked until the puzzle is solved or New game deals the next one.

Placing numbers

Tap a square, then a number; the same number again takes it out, and Erase clears the square. The given numbers can’t be changed. A number placed clears itself from the notes in its row, column and box. The selected square’s row, column and box light up, and so does every square holding its number; under each number on the pad is how many are still to place.

Notes and undo

With Notes on On, a number goes into an empty square as a small note instead, and the same number again takes the note out; a square can hold any of 1 to 9 as notes. Undo takes back your last number, note or erase, one at a time.

Checking

With Mistakes on Show, a number that doesn’t match the answer shows in coral; on Hide, nothing is checked until the end. A row, column or box filled in lights up once (on Show only when it is right, on Hide when it holds nine different numbers). When every square matches the answer, the puzzle is solved: the board ripples and Solved shows over the panel.

Controls

Tap or click a square, then a number on the pad. With a keyboard on the board, ↑ ← ↓ → move, 1 to 9 fill, Backspace, Delete or 0 clears, N switches notes and Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z undoes.

The game in progress (the puzzle, your numbers and notes, and Mistakes) is kept in this browser once it starts and comes back as you left it; New game replaces it.
