Open every square without touching a mine. Each number tells how many mines lie around it, and your first square is always safe.
Open every square that hides no mine. A number tells how many of the eight squares around it hide one; set a buoy on each mine you find.
Easy is 9 × 9 with 10 mines, Medium 16 × 16 with 40 and Hard 30 × 16 with 99. On a phone or a narrow window Hard turns, 16 across and 30 down, so its squares stay larger. The mines are laid when you open your first square, never on it or the eight around it, so it always opens a stretch of water.
On No guessing, every board is one a solver here has cleared from your first square by reasoning alone, every step forced by the numbers and the mines left. On Random, the mines lie anywhere else, and now and then a board leaves you a guess. A new visitor starts on Medium and No guessing. Until your first square or buoy, Level and Deal deal a new board at once; then they are locked until the game ends or New game deals the next one.
Tap or click a square to open it; a square with no mine around it opens the water around it too. With Buoy pressed on the pad, a tap sets a buoy on a closed square instead, and the same again takes it off; a right-click, or a finger held on a square, sets one whichever is pressed. Tap a number whose buoys are all set to open the rest around it. Buoy shows how many mines are still unmarked.
Opening a mine ends the game: every mine shows, the one you hit on Coral, and a buoy where there was no mine is crossed out; Try again plays the same board from the start, and New game deals a new one. Opening the last safe square clears the harbor: buoys go on every mine, the board ripples and Solved shows over the panel.
There is no clock: take your time. With a keyboard on the board, ↑ ← ↓ → move between squares, Enter or Space opens and B or F sets a buoy.
The game in progress (the board, what is open and buoyed, Level and Deal) is kept in this browser once it starts and comes back as you left it; New game and Try again replace it.
